When my dad died in 2003 and when my mom died in 2014, I found myself at these times spending a lot of time and energy looking back. Of course, this is a natural response when we experience the greatest of losses in life, such as the death of a parent or a longtime spouse. Dwelling in the past with enormous amounts of mental and emotional energy like this is very much a part of the grieving process for up to a couple of years afterward. However, we can sometimes become stuck in the past — year after year and even decade after decade — and this imprisonment in the past drains us and robs us of being fully present right here and now. But thanks be to God we can become unstuck in the past by the good news of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord! (more…)

Faith and spirituality come to us as a journey from the outer beginning toward the inner finishing, perfecting and fulfilling — and Jesus Christ is the Way. Saint Paul the Apostle of Christ declared the following message of Christian faith: “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and finisher of our faith” (from Hebrews 12:1-2). Also, Saint John the Apostle of Christ revealed the following message of hope from Jesus our Savior and Lord: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (from Revelation 22:13). As we approach the holiest time of year for Christianity, I am thinking more about the absolute necessity of prayer for our Christian life.  Basically, Christians believe that the human soul is literally made by God for connection and relationship with God.  In addition, because so much of this world is set against the grace, truth and purposes of God, prayer is even more essential to strengthen and keep us in the faith, hope and love of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord.  So to that end, we hear the Apostle Paul sharing God’s Word about prayer in the biblical Letter to the Ephesians, writing as follows: (more…)
