We all know that the flow of visitors to our congregation took a big hit with the major road construction we had to endure. Even electronic navigation devices steered would-be visitors to adjacent cul-de-sacs and streets during this long period of roadway construction in front and around our congregational facility. But now at long last, the road accesses are clear of all obstructions, the front of our congregation is looking good, and we also have a new and improved digital road sign declaring to the community that we are open to the public for the adoration and glory of God! When my dad died in 2003 and when my mom died in 2014, I found myself at these times spending a lot of time and energy looking back. Of course, this is a natural response when we experience the greatest of losses in life, such as the death of a parent or a longtime spouse. Dwelling in the past with enormous amounts of mental and emotional energy like this is very much a part of the grieving process for up to a couple of years afterward. However, we can sometimes become stuck in the past — year after year and even decade after decade — and this imprisonment in the past drains us and robs us of being fully present right here and now. But thanks be to God we can become unstuck in the past by the good news of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord! (more…)

I love the changing of the seasons of nature, and I love living in a part of the country where all four seasons are fully manifested.  In other words, our Fall is very Fall-ish, our Winter is very Winter-ish, our Spring is very Spring-ish, and our Summer is very Summer-ish. (more…)

Within our society that idealizes feeling “happy, happy, happy” all the time, we can sometimes be shamed into feeling bad about feeling bad.  However, this is not right, because it is an unrealistic societal pressure placed upon us that only makes us feel worse. holy-spirit-mark-jenningsEvery Sunday night since Easter Sunday, my family and I have been watching the 12-week TV miniseries “AD: The Bible Continues.” It is based upon the biblical Book of Acts and the Epistles of the New Testament, and upon the accounts of ancient historians from that same time period.

Recently, this dramatic miniseries has been covering the events of Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit was given to the Church of Yeshua/Jesus our Lord. It was the birthday of the Christian Church, the day when the followers of Jesus truly became his Body in the world after being filled with his Holy Spirit. On the Jewish festival of the harvest, called Pentecost, the Apostles of Jesus and all the believers in Jesus received the great gift of the Holy Spirit of God, just as the following Bible quotes explain: (more…)

Israel of God 1After our Lenten journey of penitential contemplation and intensified spiritual devotion, we come to the pinnacle of the Church Year known as Holy Week. It is the time of year we focus on the events of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his last supper, his torture, his crucifixion, his sacrificial death, and his glorious resurrection.
