Faith and spirituality come to us as a journey from the outer beginning toward the inner finishing, perfecting and fulfilling — and Jesus Christ is the Way. Saint Paul the Apostle of Christ declared the following message of Christian faith: “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and finisher of our faith” (from Hebrews 12:1-2). Also, Saint John the Apostle of Christ revealed the following message of hope from Jesus our Savior and Lord: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (from Revelation 22:13). jesusbaptism-7614581We have five Sundays in January for this Year of our Lord 2017, and after Epiphany (always January 6th) we observe the annual commemoration called Baptism of Our Lord Sunday that falls this year on Sunday January 8th.  Although Jesus did not need baptism, because he was and is without sin, he nevertheless received baptism in order to properly fulfill all possible requirements of righteousness and religious faith.  And as I contemplate the baptism of Jesus, I am led by the Spirit to contemplate the sacredness of water and our own baptismal covenant in, with and through Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. life_mediumOur Tanzanian brothers and sisters use a special Swahili word to describe their understanding of community. The word is “ujamaa” and it is most accurately translated as “family-hood.”  It is a unifying term that the Tanzanian government has urged all Tanzanians to embrace in order to transcend their various tribal identities in favor of a unified national identity.  And the concept of ujamaa is often represented by carvings of interlocking people mutually uplifting, encouraging and caring for one another. Within our society that idealizes feeling “happy, happy, happy” all the time, we can sometimes be shamed into feeling bad about feeling bad.  However, this is not right, because it is an unrealistic societal pressure placed upon us that only makes us feel worse. jesus_profileOur human sinfulness alienates us from God our Creator, but the wonderful good news is that Jesus Christ gives us everlasting salvation from this self-imposed alienation and grants us eternal life in heaven. This is our blessed assurance in Christ, thanks be to God!

This grace of God in Christ our Lord is not merely some generic appeal to God’s mercy and compassion. Rather, through the life, sacrificial death and redemptive resurrection of Jesus, we have absolute assurance of our atonement with God. What good news! What amazing grace! (more…)
