3_stages_icons-01When we were little children, we viewed our parents through an almost entirely positive lens.  They could do nothing wrong in our eyes.  Then we became adolescents, and we viewed our parents through an almost entirely negative lens.  They could do virtually nothing right in our teenage eyes.  And periodically in adolescence, teenagers will slip in and out of a childlike orientation toward their parents as they grow.  However, if we had loving parents, we matured to later realize as adults that our parents are basically good and decent people despite their various imperfections. jesus_profileOur human sinfulness alienates us from God our Creator, but the wonderful good news is that Jesus Christ gives us everlasting salvation from this self-imposed alienation and grants us eternal life in heaven. This is our blessed assurance in Christ, thanks be to God!

This grace of God in Christ our Lord is not merely some generic appeal to God’s mercy and compassion. Rather, through the life, sacrificial death and redemptive resurrection of Jesus, we have absolute assurance of our atonement with God. What good news! What amazing grace! (more…)

Advent-Wreath-first-candle-Advent-Sunday“Rejubilation” is a word that I made up to describe what the Advent Season and Christmastime are all about. The four weeks of Advent before Christmas and the twelve days of Christmastime are all about rejuvenating our Christian joy each year. So, we can use the word “rejubilation” to best describe the annual rejuvenation of the joy of Christ within us. (more…)

In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from the The Chronicles of Narnia saga, Aslan tells the two Pevensie children and their cousin the reason why they were brought to Narnia.  As he is sending them back to our world, Aslan says to them, “This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”

This dialogue from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader beautifully illustrates why we assemble for worship and fellowship.  We assemble each week for worship and fellowship so that by knowing Christ in the worshiping assembly for a little bit each week, we may know him better out in our daily lives.

This is why I dislike the phrase “I’m going to Church.” (more…)
